Capes, Ponchos & Parkas

New York Fashion Week is almost over and while designers are showing their latest collections (F/W 12.13), here in Uruguay we are getting ready for winter. Well, not really, it's freacking hot here! But most brands are starting to show their fall collections and obviously new trends are emerging.

For winter there's nothing that I like more than a cozy, warm coat. This season is all about capes, ponchos and parkas, so here's a look at what designers showed almost a year ago on the main fashion weeks.

New sensations

Fashion is all about changes. From trends to models, there is nothing that the fashion crowd loves more than new things. And so, designers, editors and fashionistas are constantly on the search of new style icons to get inspired from.
Hollywood has been a great source of style icons ever since the times of Audrey Hepburn, giving each generation its very own fashion icon. Nowadays it seems that the new Hollywood it girls have also become fashion's latest obsessions: Chloe, Elizabeth, Elle, Felicity and Rooney. Meet the new girls who not only are taking Hollywood by storm but also are conquering the fashion business.

GIRLY GIRL: It's hard to say that Chloe Moretz is 14 years old, why? because she has incredible taste for a girl who is on her early teen. Chloe's style is fresh, young and fun, but at the same time sophisticated and high fashion, not to mention that she has worn everything from Versace to Proenza.
Left: Chloe in Kenzo. Middle: Chloe in a Dolce & Gabbana black lace dress. Right: Chloe in a Tommy Hilfiger head-to-toe look.

THE NEW GIRL: MKA who? There's a new Olsen in town and just like her older sisters she has several fashion statements to make. Her style is flawless, unique and very elegant, and so not many can pull off  her original outfits.
Left: Lizzie in probably one of my favourite looks EVER with a T by Alexander Wang blouse. Middle: Lizzie combines an Acne shirt with an Erdem printed skirt. Right: Lizzie wearing a Missoni for Target dress.

RISK TAKER: Elle may be often criticized for her looks, but the truth is that this 13-year-old (very talented) actress is still experimenting with her style, and I'm positive that she is on the right path to become the next fashion sensation.
Left: Elle in a Valentino long dress. Middle: Elle - who stared in the Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2011 campaign - goes red in a Marc ensamble. Right: Elle in a Rodarte jumpsuit.

THE BRIT: Is she a model, is she an actress? I actually have no idea, but what caught my eye was Felicity's impecable and very british style. She definetely has that british attitude that compliments every outfit so well, specially when pulling off a Proenza Schouler look straight from the catwalk!
Left: Felicity in a Proenza Schouler look. Middle: Felicity in a classic black & white look with a twist: leather skirt and beautifully detailed blouse. Right: Felicity in a Valentino dress.

THE GRIL WITH THE BLACK DRESSES: every generation needs a daring girl who chooses Givenchy over Dolce & Gabbana, and Balenciaga over Versace. That girl is Rooney Mara, aka the actress from "The girl with the draggon tattoo". As she is travelling the world promoting her new movie, Rooney has proven that black is never boring and that you can be sexy by simply insinuating or showing the right parts.

Á la Balenciaga: Couture to wear

It looks like I ended up, once again, dedicating a single post to each collection I loved. I did it with Chloé and now the chosen one is Balenciaga's Spring 2012 collection. I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of the brand, I usually love a few looks and sporadically like the complete collection, but this season Nicolas Ghesquière created some of my favourite designs for spring/summer.

By now there is no need to say that geometry is a huge trend for spring/summer 2012 (as seen in Chloé and BCBG to name a few), and Balenciaga was no stranger to it. Geometric designs, prints, high-waisted pants and short shorts were the highlights of this couture/ready-to-wear collection, that without a doubt made tribute to those old Balenciaga collections - the ones that Cristobal himself used to made.

And the visors deserve a paragraph for themselves. Talk about innovating! I know it will take a lot of courage to step out in one of those (although I'm sure Anna dello Russo will surprise us all), but I have to admit that they looked amazing on the runway and added a futuristic vibe to the collection.

A Geometry & Colour Affair

Photo: Vogue.com

I promised myself that my next post would be on my birthday. So here I am. To celebrate here's a small review of one of my favourite collections of the season: Chloé S/S 12.
Spring/Summer 2012 was marked as the season of new beginings. Lots of new talents became creative directors at top fashion brands, and Chloé was no exception. This time was Clare Waight Keller who thanked at the end of the show as she was the new designer at this legendary french house. She is replacing Hannah MacGibbon, who designed for Chloé since 2008, and this was Waight's first collection for the brand. She had previously worked for quite a long time for Pringle of Scotland and, at first, it seemed like an odd choice. But the result was pure Chloé perfection. Colour combination, geometry and flowy dresses were the stars of the show. The collection turns out to be right in the middle between innovation and continuation of MacGibbon's previous work. Here's a recap of some of the best looks:

FRIDA.

One of my favourite models and absolutely style inspiration: Frida Gustavsson. The 18-year-old Swedish model broke into the scene a few seasons ago and immediately became a sensation, not only for her stunning looks but also for her flawless style. From casual/youthful looks to incredibly polished ones, Frida is a true chameleon. To add more, Frida seems to have an awesome personality, that goes perfectly well with her unique style. Be inspired by Frida!

Uruguay's got talent

I have to admit that I was never a fan of uruguayan fashion. Actually, I never paid much attention to it. But ever since I've been working in the busness, I realized that there is a huge amount of incredibly talented designers here. And so, I was very honored to be part of MoWeek, Montevideo's new fashion week. It's third edition took place on October 21st, 22nd and 23rd, and in my opinion it was the best one so far. Lots of young independent designers and more established brands took over the catwalk and showrooms.

Grupo 134, hailing from Argentina, the brand showed an incredible collection which mixed black, white and stripes all in amazing outfits that were masculine and femenine at the same time. it sort of reminded me of the movie A Clockwork Orange, specially the hats (loved them!)

Vale Valuchi's show was a very interesting experience. It was way more than a fashion show, it was a mixed of feelings. i sat the whole time there amazed by all the amazing designs and couldn't stop thinking that I wanted every single piece. Here's the future of uruguayan fashion.

Penny Lane is the brand that all the cool kids want to wear. In my opinion one of the most original and talented young designers around, Penny Lane showed a collection inspired on the 70's.

What's not to love about Bellmur's collection? The setting was awesome. The music was great. The clothes were amazing. If I have to summerise it in few words, the collection was for a high-class bitch, a sofisticated one.

The thing about Lemon is that they sell clothes for the everyday woman. Although I felt like I already knew the collection by heart, i have to admit that the show was fun and the styling was nice, specially with the hair and make-up.
Last but not least is Punta Carretas's Lúmina. This show is sort of a MoWeek trademark, as it has been on the schedule ever since the first edition. This season was particulary beautiful, as the show was inspired on a group of very influential women.
